Robert Sutherland was the first black lawyer in Canada. He graduated from Queen’s University in Kingston and then attended Osgoode Hall where he passed the bar in 1855. He practiced law first in Berlin (now Kitchener) and then in Walkerton from 1859-1878. Robert was well respected in the community and in 1872, he served as Reeve of the newly formed Town of Walkerton and sat on Bruce County Council.
